It’s a C world: Which one are you choosing to live in?

It's a C world

How would you describe the world you live in – using only words that start with C?

One set of words that regularly comes up when people consider this question includes: chaotic, in crisis, complex, lack of certainty, crazy …

Focusing on these words can generate a sense of being overwhelmed and even despair. At times we all feel the downward pull of these words. The unrelenting stream of news about hardships around the world and impending crises certainly feed this downward pull.

We can also describe our world as one in which there is much caring, compassion, creativity, commitment, and contribution to the common good. In the midst of all the bad stuff, there are also many stories about people reaching out to one another, stories about acts of love, heroism and caring.

When we feel pulled down into a negative spiral by the first set of Cs, we can turn to the second set for inspiration and positive direction. This redirection is not about ignoring the very real issues that require our attention. It is about ensuring that we tap into the positive power of hope, the essential ingredient for engaging with challenges and taking action to help shape a positive future.

Idea into Action:

  • What set of C words do you mostly use to describe and think about your world? What words are uppermost in your mind as you move into the next few months?
  • What can you do to shift your attention and energy to the positive Cs of care, compassion, creativity, commitment and contribution to a common good?
  • What can you do to shift the attention and energy of those in your circle of influence towards the positive Cs of care, compassion, creativity, commitment, and contribution to a common good?
